In this newletter...

2022 and the year ahead

2023 could prove the make or break year for electoral reform. This past year we have seen:

LDER has plans for 2023, including Spring Conference (York 17-19 March 2023) - details to come - and

Our ally Compass: Launch of "Win As One" campaign

Our allies are also active - on December 12, Compass launched its Win As One campaign, which is aiming to "turn the progressive majority in the country into a progressive majority in Parliament at the next general election" which includes mobilising voters in specific "Progressive Tragedy" seats to vote tactically - these are seats where progressive parties got a majority overall but the Tories still won.

"There is a progressive majority in our country, but because we are divided we keep losing. We can't carry on doing the same thing and expecting a different result. That hands power to the Tories and keeps us locked in the same old cycles.

At the last election there were 62 progressive tragedy seats where the Tories won, despite their vote being smaller than the number of people who voted for progressive parties. Progressive wins in these seats would have wiped out the Tories' entire majority."

There are numerous actions we can all take to support this campaign; including lobbying MPs and candidates. Details are here.

You can also find your nearest "Progressive Tragedy" seat here.

Electoral Commission consultation: Making voting accessible to the disabled

Members and supporters might want to contribute to the Electoral Commission consultation about making voting accessible to disabled people. Access to voting is a democratic fundamental and when this right is under threat from voter ID requirements, it's good to see a positive move. The consultation runs until January 16, 2023 - here's the link.

So, there is plenty to do and plenty to look forward to. We would also like to thank all our members and supporters for your support during this past turbulent year. Here's wishing us all a restful, fulfilling holiday period - and to a positive and decisive New Year.
