This is the fundamental change needed, changing our politics for the better and underpinning all the other changes needed (see below).
There are several contenders to replace First Past the Post, which are consistent with Make Votes Matter Good Systems Agreement.
The three systems for proportional representation that are currently in use in the United Kingdom:
We have assessed each of these systems against major democratic criteria: proportionality, local links, and accountability. In addition, we have considered the implementability of each of these systems.
We believe that STV scores best against these criteria and would be best implemented using stable constituencies based on local links: local authority boundaries are the obvious choice.
Extend STV to local elections in England and Wales
Devolve more power to local authorities
Strengthen cross-party working through select committees and other collaborative mechanisms
Change the rules on party funding, including restricting donations to individuals and imposing a donation limit of £10,000
Regulate jobs available to parliamentarians at the end of their parliamentary career
Restrict political appointments including the abolition of PM's resignation honours
