The elephant in the room at the local elections: unfairness
While we celebrate LD success in the local elections, as well as dedicated electoral reformer Hina Bokhari's re-election for another Greater London Assembly term in London, there's no escaping the obvious unfairness in most local elections caused by our current voting systems.
LDER has wide links to other reform organisations so we're very happy to share two articles written by the Electoral Reform Society:
-
Local elections: A third of the vote shouldn’t make a mayor. A report on the impact of the government's retrograde step to abandon the preferential Supplementary Vote (SV) system in favour of First Past the Post (FPTP) in mayoral and police and crime commissioner (PCC) elections.
-
England’s local elections show the warped world of First Past the Post. A broader reflection on the general unfairness of FPTP when electing councils and the unusual (and unfair) results that can arise.
Both articles are thought-provoking and interesting; and are well worth a read.
