Elections Bill - the fight's not over!
Today, the Government's Elections Bill returns to the House of Commons for its third reading. Liberal Democrats for Electoral Reform strongly support the campaign to stop this bill.
Monday January 17 is a crucial day for our democracy with the Government's Elections Bill returning to the House of Commons for its Report Stage and Third Reading.
On 2nd November, Liberal Democrats for Electoral Reform (LDER) invited members to join Wendy Chamberlain MP and Lord Paul Tyler CBE in conversation on how to make the next General Election the last to be foundt under the undemocratic first past the post system. Wendy Chamberlain is a Liberal Democrat MP, President of LDER, and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Electoral Reform. Lord Paul Tyler, a life-long advocate for democratic reform, addressed the meeting on the eve of his final speech in the House Lords, having taken the decision to retire ("the House of Lords is a place of many anachronisms, and I wouldn't like to risk becoming one of them").
As Liberal Democrats, electoral reform is in our DNA. That's why we welcome the ongoing efforts of our ally organisations such as the Electoral Reform Society, Make Votes Matter, and Unlock Democracy. After all, we know that we cannot bring about the change we want to see by acting alone.
We're looking for: Volunteer help and Funding to help us increase our campaigning to bring about - this time - proportional representation for UK public elections.
